Instructors
and the information they will cover:
Blane Bachelor, journalist,
nationally syndicated columnist, author, "10 Pitfalls to Avoid on Your Way to
Being Published."
Blane Bachelor
is an award-winning, internationally published writer ,
columnist and author of On Being a Bachelor: Thoughts on Dating, Mating and
Relating
(Virgil Press),
a book based on her popular and long-running column in Atlanta's
The Sunday Paper. A former
staffer at two metropolitan newspapers, Blane has written hundreds of articles
and columns about dating, relationships, travel and pop culture for outlets
including Marie Claire,
Women’s Health,
People.com, Tango.com, Modern
Bride,
Zink!, the
Christian Science Monitor
and USA Today.
Her popular advice column, called "Ask a Bachelor," is syndicated and
appears weekly in metro newspapers across the United States. Visit
her website at
www.askabachelor.com. And yes, Bachelor is her real last name.
Blane's topic is "10 Pitfalls
to Avoid on Your Way to Being Published." In addition to book publication, her
topic also will cover magazines and online outlets, as these are often a
stepping stone to getting a book into print. Blane will discuss some common
missteps of up-and-coming writers (including some that she herself has made!),
and how attendees can avoid them and successfully navigate the path to
publication.
Peter Bowerman,
author of the four award-winning “Well-Fed” titles on making a living as a
writer, author and publisher, “The Well-Fed Self-Publisher: How to Turn One Book
into a Full-Time Living"
Peter Bowerman, a veteran commercial
freelancer and business coach, is the self-publishing author of the three
award-winning Well-Fed Writer ti tles
on lucrative commercial freelancing - writing for businesses, and for hourly
rates of $50-125 or more. (www.wellfedwriter.com).
In 1993, with no industry experience, no previous paid
writing experience and no writing background, Bowerman built a commercial
freelancing business from fantasy to full-time in less than four months. His
corporate client list has included Coca-Cola, BellSouth, IBM, UPS, Cingular,
American Express, Mercedes-Benz and many others. He chronicled his
self-publishing success (52,000 copies of his first two books in print and a
full-time living for eight-plus years) in the award-winning 2007 release,
The Well-Fed Self-Publisher: How to Turn One Book into a Full-Time Living.
Check his book titling service at
www.titletailor.com.
Peter's topic is "The
Well-Fed Self-Publisher: How to Turn One Book into a Full-Time Living."
Landing a publisher has never been harder. Even when you do, count on anemic
royalty rates, 18 to 24 months to publication, and giving up the rights to
your book. And you’ll still be expected to do most of the marketing
yourself! Yet, thanks to the Internet, self-publishing has become easier, more
viable and more potentially lucrative than ever before. Join Peter Bowerman,
as he shares his proven strategies for production, promotion and publicity
that have yielded 60,000-plus copies of his books in print and a full-time
living for eight-plus years.
Bonus Content: Brief
overview of the high-profit field of “commercial freelancing,” Bowerman’s
chosen profession since 1993, the subject of “The Well-Fed Writer” titles, and
the vehicle by which he financed his successful self-publishing efforts.
Rebecca Burns,
former editor, Atlanta magazine, "Writing History: There's Gold in
Material Right in Your Back Yard."

Rebecca Burns is a
former editor of Atlanta magazine. An
author and journalist, she focuses on Southern history, race relations and the
intersection of race, religion and politics. Her most recent book, an account of
the 1968 Atlanta funeral for Martin Luther King Jr., was published by Scribner
in January 2011. Titled Burial for a King: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Funeral
and the Week that Transformed Atlanta and Rocked the Nation, the book
chronicles the seven days between King’s assassination and burial in Atlanta
against the backdrop of violent riots, escalating war protests and conflict
within the civil rights movement. In 2006, Burns published Rage in the Gate
City: The Story of the 1906 Atlanta Race Riot. In 2008, Burns was selected
for the PEN/Faulkner Writers in Schools program for Atlanta Public Schools. A
second edition of Rage in the Gate City was published by the
University of Georgia
Press in July 2009.
In her presentation, Rebecca will focus on how to develop historical materials
available in your own home town - materials that don't require expensive
out-of-town trips.
Angela K. Durden, book coach, author of children’s and business books,
editor of a new anthology of business essays, publisher, and businesswoman/owner
of Writer for Hire, "Are You Ready for
Publication?
Former freelance writer Angela K. Durden is the author
of children’s and
business
books and editor of a new anthology of business essays. She is the owner of Writer
for Hire!, a company established in 1992 that provides commercial
writing, graphic design, and print brokering services to business. For almost
four years, Angela served as editor to an international publication for a
trade group, developing it into a tightly focused and much respected
publication for the industry. Durden designed and teaches a popular
creative writing workshop for
children and adults in schools and other venues. She is a member of the
Atlanta Writer's Club and will be
conducting a weekly Children's Book Writing
Workshop in March and April at Eagle Eye Book Store in Decatur,
Georgia, on Thursday evenings. In 1999 she set up a small publishing company
offering prepublication, editing, and coaching services to new authors. Angela
often speaks, writes, and consults on the subjects of the businesses of
publishing and commercial writing.
The
Spring Book Show workshop she will conduct is entitled:
"Are You Ready for Publication?"
Angela asks that those who attend
her session bring in their unpublished or soon-to-be re-released works at any
stage of development, and that includes any interior and exterior designs. She
will review your work with an eye towards marketing, production methods and
costs, and will make constructive suggestions for improvement. What will the
paying public think of your baby? This workshop will critique unpublished
works with attention to the problems and pitfalls of self-editing, the level
of quality of editor to seek, and changes in the publishing market.

Echo Garrett,
author of My Orange Duffel Bag: A Journey to Radical Change and Why
Don’t They Just Get a Job?: One Couple’s Mission to Ending Poverty in their
Community, and award-winning journalist, "Finding Your Voice: Writing Inspirational Biography."
She will be joined by Sam Bracken of Salt Lake City, Utah, a Franklin
Covey inspirational speaker who was the subject of one of her recent books.
Echo has written 10 nonfiction books
(three of which garnered six-figure advan ces via her literary agent) and has
ghostwritten three. Her articles have appeared in more than 75 national
publications including Parade, Business Week, Delta Sky, The New York Times
and Money. She elected to self-publish her latest book My Orange
Duffel Bag, which was the November Book of the Month for the nation’s
largest book club, the Pulpwood Queens, and has already gone to a second
printing after selling out of the first 5,000 copies within a few months of
release. She co-founded and leads the Orange Duffel Bag Foundation, a nonprofit
that does leadership training for homeless teens and those aging out of foster
care based on the self-help principles found in My Orange Duffel Bag. The
nonprofit’s work and the book have been featured on CNN. Echo has worked with
four top literary agents in the course of her 25-year career and recently signed
with nation’s most successful agent for nonfiction, Jan Miller of Dupree Miller.
Echo will be joined by
co-author Sam Bracken, who is on the cutting
edge
of all the new ways to convey your story in his job as general manager of media
publishing and consumer products for Franklin Covey. Sam’s inspirational graphic
mini-memoir contains transformational 7 Rules for the Road: Desire,
Awareness, Meaning, Choice, Love, Change and Gratitude. In deliberately
stark, almost poetic fashion, the first part of the book reveals Sam’s
harrowing story of growing up in Las Vegas in a family best described as a
whacked-out version of The Brady Bunch. Despite suffering unspeakable
abuse and being abandoned and homeless at age 15, Sam triumphed over the odds
and offers a powerful message of hope, love, forgiveness and gratitude. The
book’s title comes from the fact that when Sam was awarded a full-ride football
scholarship to the Georgia Institute of Technology and came to Atlanta,
everything he owned fit in an orange duffel bag. Sam speaks about his
experiences to audiences all over the world.
Jennie Helderman, author of three books, "Tips on writing nonfiction for
publication"
Jennie Helderman is an Alabama transplant to
Atlanta who earned an award for fiction while writing her third nonfiction
book. She has interviewed CEOs for Inc magazine, profiled high-powered
women for March magazine, and
chaired the editorial board of a 150,000
circulation alumnae quarterly. Her career, though, was in community
development, especially promoting women and children's issues. From 2000-2006
she chaired the board of Alabama's DHR, which oversees a $1.6 billion budget
and 520,000 clients per month.
In
her workshop, Jennie will discuss "What's involved in telling someone else's
story? When do you need permission? How do you get at the heart of an
interview? Discussion and tips about interview etiquette, asking sensitive
questions, rights and releases, libel and privacy, creative nonfiction vs.
straight facts. And when you have the story, where do you sell it?"
Rob
Jenkins, nationally known columnist and professor of English, Georgia
Perimeter College, "Write What You Know for Pleasure and Dough."
Rob Jenkins is a
nationally-known columnist and blogger for The Chronicle of Higher
Education. His
first book, Building a Career in America's Community Colleges,
was published in January 2011 by the American Association
of
Community Colleges. He also writes a locally syndicated weekly column for
The Gwinnett
Daily Post, Georgia's
second largest daily newspaper. His work has appeared in the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution, Gwinnett
Magazine, Academe Magazine, The Chronicle Review, The Clearinghouse, and
Southern Poetry Review,
among other publications. He lives in Gwinnett County and teaches writing at
Georgia Perimeter College.
Rob's workshop is entitled "Write What You Know
for Pleasure and Dough." Learn from a well-known local and national columnist
how to become an accomplished, successful non-fiction author - and perhaps
even make money at it - just by writing about things you know. His
presentation will cover such topics as discovering your voice, finding an
audience and identifying potential markets. It will also discuss the
importance of building relationships with editors and publishers, marketing
yourself both as a writer and a speaker and learning how to tailor your
writing for the Internet.
